Statement by Liberal Leader Bob Rae on the ongoing violence in Syria

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-August 2, 2011
OTTAWA— Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement on the ongoing violence in Syria:

"Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s latest attacks on the people of Syria which began on the eve of the holy month of Ramadan are a horrifying assault on civilian freedoms and expression. The government of Syria must be held accountable for its deplorable and indiscriminate use of violence against its own people and their legitimate calls for reform.

We stand with the people of Syria, both in their homeland and here in Canada, in their pursuit of democratic reform and universal human rights.  The Government of Canada must work with the Syrian community to find a solution to end this cycle of violence against civilians, including supporting their fundraising and humanitarian efforts with dollar-for-dollar matching and addressing the needs of the thousands of refugees already displaced by this regime’s brutality.

The international community’s silence only encourages further transgressions by the Assad regime. Canada must make its voice heard on the world stage as we stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Syria in their struggle for democracy. On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I urge the government of Canada to take a strong position in support of a United Nations resolution condemning the violence of the Assad regime, and to expedite family class immigration applications in the queue and respect the desires of those Syrians who wish to escape
