Indo-Canadian Star Lisa Ray Encourages South Asian Community to Talk about Breast Cancer

Internationally acclaimed performer and philanthropist shares her reasons for being involved in the 2011 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Sept. 28, 2011 – CIBC (CM: TSX) (CM: NYSE) – Canada’s South Asian community has to become more aware and more comfortable talking about issues likes breast cancer, says Lisa Ray, cancer survivor and celebrity spokesperson for the 2011 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.

Ms. Ray, an internationally acclaimed performer and philanthropist, is one of five Canadian celebrities and Olympians who are the face of CIBC’s Run for the Cure campaign this year. “We have to talk about breast cancer more in the South Asian community, and bring it out in the open because it’s too often not spoken about,” said Ms. Ray. “As a ‘cancer graduate’, my life has an added dimension and purpose that I didn’t have before. Being transparent and open about my experience with cancer has served many different purposes, and I’m proud to be able to be connected with the CIBC Run for the Cure.”

“The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and CIBC work tirelessly to bring the awareness needed to such an important cause. I’m so grateful to have this second chance at life, so thankful for those who have supported me, and I wish the same for all those who are going through their own difficult journeys. I hope that by sharing my experience about the importance of paying attention to changes in your health, talking openly with your doctor and getting tested, I can motivate others in the South Asian community to do the same.”

This year marks CIBC's 15th Anniversary as title sponsor of the Run for the Cure – the largest single-day, volunteer-led fundraising event in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation which puts donor dollars to work to fund breast cancer research, education and awareness programs in Canada.

“This is a cause that is very close to our hearts because it impacts the lives of so many Canadians – including many of our team members, our clients and our loved ones,” said Raza Hasan, CIBC Senior Vice-President.

“We have covered a lot of ground in these past 15 years,” Mr Hasan continued, “and we continue to be very committed to raising funds and building awareness through the CIBC Run for the Cure. StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Sept 29, 2011 - Tell Me O Khuda is senior Bollywood actress and danseuse, Hema Malini’s second directorial venture, with Dil Aashna Hai which had Shah Rukh Khan and Divya Bharti. The film is being touted as a relaunch for Hema Malini’s daughter, Esha Deol as an attempt to revive her floundering Bollywood caree. Arjan Bajwa will be seen as the male lead opposite Esha Deol. The film also stars some stalwarts of Hindi cinema like Dharamendra, Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna.
It will be for the first time that Esha Deol will be sharing screen space with her father Dharamendra. The role was initially offered to Amitabh Bachchan but things did not work out for some reason. “We had offered a role to Amitji for this film. But due to some reasons, it did not work out. I am glad that things did not work out with him and that is the reason Dharamji is in the film,” says Malini. Produced and directed by Hema Malini, Tell Me O Kkhuda, is a drama, that tracks the story of a girl’s passionate quest to know her origins.

Tell Me O Khuda also grabbed the headlines when Hema Malini decided to release her film on the same day as Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One. Considering the hype and hullabaloo around Ra.One, everyone was wondering whether Tell Me O Khuda would be able to combat the competition by Ra.One. An unperturbed Hema Malini said, "We had a meeting with the distributors and exhibitors. And we all decided to go for a Diwali release. I was advised against it since 'RA.One' is also releasing for Diwali. But it's not as if people would want to watch only one film during Diwali," said Hema. "If they like both they'll see them both. I personally think Diwali is a wonderful window for any auspicious film. Some of the biggest successes have happened during the festive season. So why not go for it?" Hema isn't afraid of the competition. "We've made an emotional father-daughter story. I don't think we need to fear competition from anyone."

Rajshri’s Yahaan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli now shifts its focus on Namrata Thapa, who portrays the character of Lata in the show.  Lata was let go by her husband and in spite of being married she was living with her father and family.  But now Lata’s life has taken a positive turn. She has managed to find herself a job.  It’s a new beginning for Lata, and she feels herself to be more confident after what all had happened in her past.  We asked Namrata Thapa, how she feels her character is shaping, she says, “Lata earlier was seen as submissive and reserved.  Keeping her values intact, Lata now will be seen working to support her family.  It’s a huge step for Lata, as in our society a divorcee is looked down upon in smaller cities, metros are better. Leave alone society, many a times women of the same house also demotivate, which will be seen in Lata's case. Through the show we are trying to send a message that life should be led normally even after divorce and it should not consider it as a stigma.  ” With the job, a ray of hope has entered the otherwise simple and mundane life of Lata. Working will open up new avenues for her personally and professionally. Watch Lata’s life blossom in Yahaaan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli at 8:30, on Zee TV.

Date: September 28th  Sept, 2011-Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement to mark the celebration of Rosh Hashanah:

"On behalf of myself and Laureen, I extend my best wishes to all those who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah.

"Rosh Hashanah - or the Jewish New Year, is the beginning of a significant period for Jewish people, known as the High Holy Days.  It is a time to reflect on another year gone by through prayer and self-examination.

"Most importantly, Rosh Hashanah is a time when teshuva is performed, an act of repentance – taking the time to apologize to those you have wronged, and seeking to better yourself.

"During Rosh Hashanah, I hope that all Canadians take the opportunity to join with friends and neighbours and reflect on the innumerable contributions of the Jewish community to our country's rich and diverse heritage.

"I wish the Jewish community a meaningful celebration and hope that the New Year brings you health, peace and prosperity.

"L'Shanah Tovah Tikatevu – May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a good year"

Harper Government takes action with tough new warning messages for tobacco products

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-September 27, 2011-OTTAWA – The Harper Government gave final approval for tough new warning labels on cigarettes and little cigar packages, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, and the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today. Tobacco manufacturers and importers have been given until March 21, 2012 to transition to the new labels, while retailers will have until June 19, 2012 to ensure all packages on their shelves feature these new labels.

“Our Government has followed through on its commitment to introduce new, stronger labelling requirements on key tobacco products,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “The new Tobacco Act regulations will put new, updated health warnings and information into the hands of millions of smokers.”

The new health warnings are part of new Tobacco Act regulations, now in force, that set out new labelling requirements for cigarettes and little cigars.

"The messages introduced today reflect recent research on the health hazards associated with tobacco use and the benefits of quitting," said Minister Blaney. "This is an important initiative for the health of Canadians."

The new health warnings feature, for the first time, compelling stories from people affected by tobacco use, such as the late anti-smoking activist Barb Tarbox. Two of the messages feature images of Ms. Tarbox, taken while she was dying of lung cancer. Pat Tarbox, her husband at the time, and Mackenzie Tarbox, their daughter, joined Minister Aglukkaq for the announcement.

“I applaud the courage and commitment of those who are sharing their experience with tobacco use through these messages,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “I’m especially proud to welcome the family of Ms. Tarbox. Her unforgettable image has become a symbol of the hazards of smoking.”

“The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada commends Minister Aglukkaq on this important initiative aimed at reducing death and disability caused by tobacco industry products, including heart disease and stroke, and other chronic diseases," says Bobbe Wood, President, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. "We've learned that when it comes to tobacco control, we must be comprehensive  a key component of this approach includes strong, graphic and prominent warnings on tobacco packaging."
The regulations will be published soon in Canada Gazette, Part II.  Also now in force are new regulations prohibiting the terms “light” and “mild”, and variations thereof, on cigarettes, little cigars and various other tobacco products and accessories.

Cuss words in Shayari and Ghazals

Gulzar will definitely strike the right chord with his great ghazals and shayari compositions but Sampooran Singh Kalra might not be a familiar name in poetry world.

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Sep 27, 2011 - This veteran lyricist, poet and director and the man who penned the Oscar winning track Jai Ho, was in Ahmedabad to recite his shayaris to Urdu poetry lovers. Hours prior to the shayari session, Gulzar got chatty and was at his wittiest best when Ahmedabad Times caught up with him. We asked him how he liked Ahmedabad. Gulzar flashed a warm smile and said, "This is not my first visit here. I've come to Ahmedabad several times and am well-versed with the city. I've even written poems about this city." Interestingly, Gulzar is also busy, "translating two Gujarati poetry books."

What is it like penning songs in present day Bollywood films? Pat comes the reply, "If we write a song like Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki today, will it make any sense? You neither have aangan nor tulsi in most urban homes. The transformation of lyrics was inevitable. Besides when I write lyrics for a film, I get all minute details on the storyline, location, character, situation and characters' lingo - keeping all that in mind, I pen the song. I can't stick to yesteryear language as it won't have any relevance in contemporary films." So what does he feel about the usage of abusive words in lyrics which are quite a rage now? "What's wrong with using abusive words in songs? Cinema reflects society. Films have not invented such cuss words, they're used in daily life by people anyway. Just because a film uses them in a song doesn't mean those films are to be blamed for the usage of cuss words," he says.

Gulzar's directed various critically claimed films like Parichay, Koshish, Aandhi, Ijaazat, Maachis and Hu Tu Tu. What's keeping him from direction? "I feel film-making is too time consuming process and will leave me no time to focus on writing poetry or lyrics. Plus, I have developed a new attraction for theatre, so I'd like to focus my attention there," says Gulzar. Does he miss the people he has worked with? "Oh yes! I miss all the actresses I have worked with and miss Sanjeev Kumar, Vinod Mehra and Shammi Kapoor," he says.

Gulzar's works talk about the common man. How does he feel the pulse of the middleclass so well? He says, "I might be a celebrity today, but at every point of my life, I have to deal with a common man. And, don't forget I come from a middleclass background too!"

On a parting note, we can't help asking about his fascination for the crisp, pristine white kurta pyjama that's become his signature attire? He smiles disarmingly, "White's the colour I love."

2012 Replay of NO Aggressive Evaluation of Obama’s Policies for Progressive Socialized Liberalism

Progressive left leaning liberal policies, the biased support of the main stream media for Obama in 2008 and failure to honestly vet his political economic theories or union ties have help make the next generation of American youth permanently poorer

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Sep 17, 2011 - Obama’s Stimulus Plan 2 Bribes Business to Buy People a 2 Year Temporary Infrastructure Job for 2 Years of Tax Concessions and continues to spend borrowed money for venture capital projects for an unproven and disastrous green jobs economy.

Americans have to look at Spain and see just how the Spanish debt, like the American structural deficit, because of reckless government spending policies on borrowed money has skyrocketed. Economists for a few years have urged Spain and now America to embrace austerity measures without much political success from either country.

Both countries continue following previous wasteful government spending on borrowed money for similar failed ideologies for a green energy economic policy. Spain now has an official unemployment rate of 22%.

Obama’s stimulus 1 resulted in the loss of 2.4 Million American jobs and a  combined loss of over 6 Million Americans being out of work, lost a job or not even looking for a job thanks to his administration’s failed policies of progressive socialized liberalism.

His stimulus 2, at a cost of an additional half a Billion dollars, just more  recycled failed ideas of smoke and mirror rhetoric for hope and change from Keynesian and Marxists economic philosophies and theories based on his stimulus 1 at a cost of close to $1 Trillion dollars of borrowed money.

From the very beginning, of his campaign for the position of President and without having any executive or management skills and relying on his political experience as a congressman and union community organizer, Obama could not answer questions over and above his pay scale or grade, as he himself admitted.

Unfortunately the progressive liberal left leaning extremism ideologies of main stream media because of their biased support of democrats never openly, transparently or honestly vetted Obama’s background as a candidate or his experience, economic theories, political philosophies, work history as a union community organizer or complete lack of creating jobs in the private sector free market system during his campaign for the position of President.

This junior Obama administration has mishandled the American economy, based on his support for the Marxist political ideologies and failed Keynesian economic theories for radically and fundamentally changing rules and regulations of a free market enterprise system on a daily basis that continues a financial crisis which shall make every American citizen and the next generation of American youth permanently poorer.

Let’s Celebrate Diwali as an Enviro-Thon! And in its True Essence

This shabad “Pawan Guru Paani Pita Mata Dharat Mahatt” that means air is the guru, water the father and earth the great mother. Guru Granth Sahib explored the environmental importance in our lives centuries ago. I never paid attention to this religious context although I heard it every time I went to the Gurdwara. Gurbani has guided us through its priceless teachings since the ages: messages about the environment. I grew up with these teachings and followed through with them as well. In other words, the loyal love to our great mother nature was actual motivation, but now I realize that love to this mother was founded and blended into my personality through this quote, of which I am so grateful. Why don’t we make a pledge this year and help the environment?  It is the perfect Diwali gift to our loved ones. Let’s celebrate this year’s festival of lights in a green way by planting more trees, avoiding fireworks and fulfilling the dreams of our upcoming generations to have this world as a green heaven!

The festival of lights has always been celebrated with pollutant-filled fireworks ever since they were introduced. We do not need the use of fireworks while celebrating Diwali because there are many better and non-polluting ways to celebrate Diwali.

For most people the act of setting off of firecrackers is the highlight of Diwali. The brighter the sparkles, the louder the noise - the greater the thrill!! In fact to many of us, these forms of entertainment seem so appropriate and most essential when celebrating the 'Festival of Lights'.

But little do people realize that in our increasingly populated and polluted cities, the temporary joy of watching the firecrackers is soon replaced by the intense air pollution caused by them. The toxic substances used in the firecrackers release toxic gases that are harmful to the health of all living beings.

Sadly, very few of us realize that the firecrackers used on Diwali are also made by very young children. Since the substances being handled are extremely toxic many of these child laborers get sick and die at a young age, usually in their early teenage years.

It is actually safer to watch a fireworks display than it is to burn the crackers. Try and mobilize your neighborhood to not organize a fireworks display, as is the practice in most parts of the world but instead light diyas in your home to maintain the spirit of Diwali.

With this practice you will be eco-friendly and you could be helping to save someone’s life.

Because remember folks, safety first!

As my last word, SHOP LOCAL so we can avoid over heavy packaging… and use reusable containers for food, sweets and gifts etc. Make sure we sort our trash into garbage, recycling and compost. The environment will thank us back!!! We should all step forward to protect the environment and our world in which we live in for the future generations!

Khap Movie Preview

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Khap is a contemporary tale of traditional massacre erupting in the heartland of central India where certain villages still follow cruel age-old customs. This is where a story of passion, dishonour and deceit unfolds; where the sweet innocence of youth is throttled by uncompromising beliefs.

The movie stars Om Puri, Govind Namdeo, Manoj Pahwa, Uvika Chaudhary, Mohnish Bahl, Alok Nath, Anuraadha Patel and Sarrtaj.

The film opens in the capital where two youths Ria and Kush fall in love. Meanwhile, news channels highlight the death of Veer and Sureeli who are found dead in Omkar Chaudhary’s village. Ria has no idea that Omkar is her grandfather. Madhur, Ria’s father, had left his native village due to differences with Omkar over the ruthless pratha (tradition) of honour killings. Madhur is chosen to lead a commission to investigate the suspicious deaths of young Veer & Sureeli.

Veer’s father Daulat Singh is a staunch supporter of this pratha and is unmoved with his son’s death. However, Sukhiram, Sureeli’s father, is broken by his daughter’s demise. Will Sukhiram be weakened and reveal all to the Human Rights commission?

Torn between his love for his son and his strong belief in the pratha, Omkar promises Madhur that he would put an end to the ruthless killings in the village.

Ria and Kush are also pulled into the vortex of these inhuman customs.

How do the patriarchs of the pratha respond to these happenings? Does Omkar Chaudhary change for the sake of his granddaughter? These are the questions that the film attempts to raise.

Are we courageous enough to face the truth?

Canada’s Economy Continues to Lead the Way: Parm Gill

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Date: September 24, 2011 - Brampton-Springdale, Ontario – Amid uncertain economic times, our Government has remained focused on what matters to Canadians – creating jobs and promoting economic growth. This week, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasted Canada will have the strongest overall economic growth among the Group of Seven (G-7) countries over the next two years.
“Our country remains financially and economically stable due to sound banking fundamentals and fiscal policy and a proven low-tax plan,” said Parm Gill, Member of Parliament for Brampton-Springdale. “However, we are not immune to the economic turbulence facing the global economy.”

The IMF’s forecast for Canada is yet another example of our global economic leadership and strength. This follows a trend for Canada over the past few years, which includes:
 The strongest job growth record in the G-7, with nearly 600,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
 The World Economic Forum ranked Canada’s financial system the soundest in the world for the fourth consecutive year, and;
 Moody’s renewing Canada’s AAA credit rating.
Our country has been praised for its economic resiliency, very high government financial strength, low susceptibility to event risk and our sound fiscal and financial direction. Our Government continues to work on providing hard-working Canadians with a strong financial system, a growing economy and jobs for those who need them the most.
“We must stay on course and continue to implement the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan to ensure we remain strong in an uncertain economic climate,” said Parm Gill. “We have a proven job-creating initiative that will continue to move our country forward.”
