The new building opens to the public during Applefest weekend

Markham ~ September 22, 2011 ~ On September 24, 2011, during Markham’s annual Applefest weekend, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Councillor Carolina Moretti, Members of Markham Council and Paul Calandra, M.P. for Oak Ridges-Markham will officially open to the public the Markham Museum’s new $9-milllion, 17,000 square foot LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold standard Collections Building. It is one of the first in Canada built to these standards and is a benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance “green” buildings.

This new facility was made possible with funding support from Markham and the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage. It is a significant investment in culture in Markham and will strengthen the Museum’s role as a major regional attraction.

Markham Hosts Its First International Festival of Authors Touring Event

An evening featuring world-renowned authors
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-MARKHAM, ON, Sept 20, 2011 ~ Markham is thrilled to be chosen as the only location in York Region and one of two GTA locations to host the International Festival of Authors (IFOA) touring event on Friday October 21, 2011.  Markham, in partnership with the Markham Arts Council (MAC), will host an intimate evening where four award-winning and world-renowned authors: Shilpi Somaya Gowda, Dany Laferrière, Bharati Mukherjee, and Francisco Goldman will hold personal readings of their works in an interactive setting.

                                                            

This unique and very special evening will be held in the Transportation Building at Markham Museum.  It will be hosted by TVO’s producer and host of Saturday Night at the Movies, Thom Ernst.

For those wishing to attend, the programme allows for two distinct opportunities: 

1.    The Mayor’s Hour – Beginning at 6:15 pm join Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti for a catered personal meet and greet with the authors.  Only 100 tickets are available for this exclusive hour which is followed by authors’ readings. Tickets are $50.

2.    An Evening of Readings – Join us at 7:15 pm where each author with provide readings of their works and hold interactive session afterward.  There are only 140 general admission tickets available at a cost of only $10.

Youth Encouraged to Explore the Arts at the

Mississauga Youth World Arts Event 

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-MISSISSAUGA, ON - The Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) is calling youth to explore the exciting world of the arts at the Mississauga Youth World Arts Event on October 1, 2011. The celebration will include free activities and workshops hosted by leading artist educators from the Mississauga community. Presented by the MAC in collaboration with the Mississauga Youth Games, the event will be presented as part of Culture Days, a national celebration of arts and culture.


A fabulous day of free events, the Mississauga Youth World Arts Event will include a Media Arts Workshop, the "Making It Big" Theatre Workshop, the "Make Your Mark" Mural and Design Workshop, a Hip-Hop Dance Workshop hosted by Marcelino da Costa aka "Frost Flow" from the Ground illusionz Hip-Hop Collective and an Open Mic. As part of closing ceremonies, participants will share their work, skills, and perform what they have learned during the Mississauga World Arts Event. Young artists of all ages are encouraged to participate in this free event and try their hand in the arts! The fun will take place from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at T.L. WHAT: Rising hip-hop star Reema Major headlines the sixth annual urbanNOISE festival - a free, all-ages urban arts festival organized by young people in the Rexdale/Jamestown communities to inspire the community to stand up to violence.
A large graffiti mural - "R.I.P: Six Degrees of Separation" - will be unveiled. It will display the names of Rexdale residents that have died from violence, and community members will be invited to add names to it at the festival.

In a move that Rob Ford's critics are calling anti-democratic and an attack on free speech, the city is attempting to stop the Mass Meeting to Stop Ford’s Cuts from taking place. They are shutting down Dufferin Grove Park, where the meeting is scheduled from 12pm to 5pm on Saturday, September 10. Organizers from the Toronto Stop the Cuts Network say they are expecting thousands of residents to attend, to write a Toronto Declaration,  ‘a vision for the Toronto people need and deserve’.


The city has cancelled all programming at Dufferin Grove Park for the day. There will be none of the usual services at this busy park on a Saturday - no gardening, no food cart, no water around the playground. “Shutting down Dufferin Grove Park is an attempt to drive a wedge between Toronto Stop the Cuts and community members who rely on park services”, says Yogi Acharya, a member of Stop the Cuts. “It is also intended to prevent park staff, unionized with CUPE local 79, from participating in or helping with this meeting.”

“These heavy handed tactics against the most democratic of things – a meeting in a public park – shows that Ford and many in City Hall have no respect for Torontonians who disagree with their agenda”, says event
organizer Constanza Farias. “The message is clear: if you do not support the gutting of city services and the privatization of everything that isn’t nailed down, you have no rights here in Ford Nation”

Toronto Stop the Cuts Network is moving ahead with this meeting and urging more people to come out. “We were expecting nearly 2,000 people at first, but after this ridiculous move, I am sure more people are going to show up.” says Toronto Stop the Cuts Network member Jessica Lyons. “This is a pathetic attempt to thwart a movement that can’t be stopped. It shows their weakness and desperation. Ford obviously does not believe in democracy, but the people of Toronto will stand up to this bully”.

During critical rescue operations,  the contentious beams were alleged to have been a spontaneous source of inspiration to certain firefighters and first-responders at the scene, a position which has angered an atheist group seeking an injunction against the display of the “cross” during the highly anticipated memorial service at Ground Zero, to be attended by President Obama and other notable officials.

Toastmasters Hosts Youth Leadership Program at Brampton Library

Once again, Brampton Library and Toastmasters have partnered to help youth ages 14 to 18 develop their communication and leadership skills so they can become leaders in business, industry and their community.

Brampton Toastmasters Club #2347 are sponsoring this initiative, which promises to give interested teens a chance to increase their self-confidence as they learn, make new friends and have fun. As an added bonus, certificates will be issued at the final session as part of a special graduation ceremony.

Each session is conducted as a meeting, not a class, and everyone who takes part gets a Participant’s Notebook, compliments of Brampton Toastmasters Club #2347. The group selects officers who preside over the meetings, and remaining members are assigned other duties on a rotating basis, so everyone is actively involved. Discussions take place at each meeting, and participants also deliver short impromptu and prepared speeches while learning to apply the principles of listening, thinking and speaking.

This exciting opportunity will take place at Brampton Library for eight weeks, beginning

Saturday, October 1 to November 19, 2011. The sessions will be held in the Auditorium at the Library’s

Four Corners Branch, 65 Queen St. E from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Lakeshore Corridor Community Team's annual summer event returns on August 27^th with bigger paddle boat races, live entertainment, silent auction, prizes and much more!

Teams of two will compete in paddle boat races at the Port Credit Legion to raise money for charity and help those living in the local community. Races will be held every hour in a round-robin tournament, and the winning team will be presented with a special commemorative trophy!

Entry fees are $275 per team of 2 (charitable tax receipts can also be issued). Boats are provided for the event. Each team that registers will also receive four tickets to a barbecue banquet, which will be held after the paddling portion of the event. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to Lakeshore Corridor Community Team, a non-profit community group that supports individuals in need from the Port Credit, Lorne Park, Clarkson and Lakeview areas.

Deepak was recently named as one of the "25 Most Influential Indians In North America," by reputed Indian publishing house, Global Indian Origin, that researches and publishes on the Indian diaspora.

Prita Chhabra to Perform in Milton, Ft. Lauderdale

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Fresh off a live performance on CBS Tampa's morning talk show "Studio 10" in Florida, recording artist Prita Chhabra will be back in Canada to perform at Milton's Low Key Fest on August 27th at Karlovac Park.

Prita will then return to Florida to perform at Florida's biggest annual South Asian festival, IndoPak Fest, taking place September 18 at Ft. Lauderdale beach.
Prita was also recently chosen "artist of the day" by the Tampa Bay Times newspaper, and was interviewed for “The Ron Seggi Show” at Universal Studios in Orlando. Known as the “Tonight Show” of radio with over 15,000 celebrity interviews to date, “The Ron Seggi Show” broadcasts to over 1,100 radio stations around the world, including Armed Forces Radio.

"Breakaway" Media Launch at Host Mississauga. - Movie Releases 30th Sept 2011 World Wide

Canadian Production "Breakaway" is about to launch  Bollywood North America along with Canadian Film Industry to the world wide audience. 

Song "Shera Di Khom"  is already breaking  records world wide.

The film has a stellar star cast from Bollywood, Hollywood and Bollywood North America (Canada)  with Vinay Virmani as Rajveer Singh,  Russell Peters as Sonu, Camilla Belle as Melissa Winters, Anupam Kher as Darvesh Singh, Rob Lowe as Coach Dan Winters, Sakina Jaffrey as Livleen Singh, Gurpreet Ghuggi as Uncle Sammy, Noureen DeWulf as Reena. Cameo appearances, Akshay Kumar, Drake, Ludacris.

"It is a family film for kids to seniors with a message that is going to touch every ones heart to its core", says the promoter Nav Bhatia of NBE.  "Every time I see the movie I love it even more", says Nav again from his heart.

"North America Bollywood and the Canadian film industry are going to be recognized in a different way all over the world with the release of this film which is going to go world wide on the 30th September 2011" says co-producer Pauline Dhillon.

Film is also being shown at TIFF on 10th of September in a grand style where the entry of the lead cast will be on an elephant... typically symbolic to Indian customs. A section of the Yonge Street is going to be closed for that day.

There is going to be a "Breakaway Buzz Mela" in Brampton on 11th September from 10am to 6pm where all the stars are going to be present.  The lead for this dynamic star-studded event  has been taken on by Anu Srivastava of Brampton City.

Toronto’s premiere contemporary Indian dance company presents Canadian premiere of

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Under the artistic direction of Hari Krishnan, Toronto’s inDANCE is proud to present the Canadian premiere of Fallen Rain, a one-of –a-kind evening of courtesan inspired dance from South India. With original dance and music based on traditional material from South India, presented through a contemporary vein, Fallen Rain premiered to rave reviews in India in December 2010 and January 2011. The 60-minute full-length work will be presented October 1 and 2 at the Robert Gill Theatre as part of the company’s fall home season in Toronto.

Initially choreographed as a series of solos and duets, the Canadian premiere of Fallen Rain is a work for seven dancers and 6 musicians in a dynamic evening of high-energy and lyrical dance with pulsating live music and English spoken text. Animated by the poetic and kinetic world of dance in courtesan communities, the repertoire is drawn largely from nineteenth-century Tanjavur, South India. Tanjavur is historically the royal city of South India, nurturing the arts and is the birthplace of Bharatanatyam dance.

On January 4, 2011, inDANCE became the first Canadian dance company to have ever been commissioned by the current prince of Tanjavur, His Highness Babaji Bhosale to present Fallen Rain at the ancient Tanjavur palace where these dances were traditionally performed in the 19th century. This was a huge honour for inDANCE and the kind of excellent work the company is fostering in Canada.

Fallen Rain is a metaphor for erotic experience, and the choreography of this work weaves lyric poetry into a dynamic, movement-based interpretation. Fallen Rain includes rare genres of dance, which have never been presented on the Canadian stage.

Savour Stratford Culinary Festival Reveals 2011 Poster at Launch Party

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Monday, August 15^th, 2011  STRATFORD, ON -Savour Stratford Perth County Culinary Festival, awarded “Ontario’s Best Culinary Experience” in 2010 by Ontario Tourism, will be even better in 2011. This two day celebration of farmers, artisans, chefs, musicians and food lovers takes place in the heart of Stratford’s heritage garden district and historic Market Square September 24 & 25.

The 2011 festival poster, designed by Stratford native Jack Dylan, was revealed at a community launch in City Hall Auditorium, August 15. Posters were presented to MPP John Wilkinson and Councillor Paul Nickel, City of Stratford, both strong supporters of the culinary festival.

A call was extended to Stratford and area artists requesting examples of their work along with their vision of a poster celebrating our award winning culinary festival. Finalists were reviewed and Jack Dylan, international illustrator, was awarded the commission. The idea originated with restaurant owners Susan Dunfield and Bronwyn Linley who each offered dinner for two at their respective restaurants to accompany an honorarium to the winning artist.

Jack Dylan expressed his inspiration in creating the festival poster. “I grew up in Stratford and lived along the Avon River, on William Street,” said Jack in a recent interview. “I wanted to show York Street – a view of that bank that shows the downtown – and I was also thinking about Tom Patterson Island and the wonderful willow trees. Even the chef in the poster was inspired by a friend of mine who’s now a chef here in Stratford.” A limited edition of 50 posters signed and numbered by Mr. Dylan are available for sale at $50 each. Additional posters will also be available for sale ($10) at Stratford Tourism Alliance with proceeds supporting the festival.

Danielle Brodhagen, Director of the Culinary Festival, presented the new website www.savourstratford.com and the 2011 culinary festival highlights.

·        The Festival expands into the historic Market Square with a culinary stage and entertainment Saturday and Sunday.

·        Montréal chef Chuck Hughes, winner of Iron Chef America and host of the popular Food Network show, Chuck’s Day Off, is coming to Stratford.  “Chuck’s Night Out,” a cocktail party on Friday, September 23^rd will launch the culinary festival at the Stone Maiden Inn. Chuck will be participating in the festival throughout the weekend.

·        Chef Connie DeSousa, Top Chef Canada finalist and chef/owner of CHARCUT Roast House, Calgary, comes to Stratford’s Culinary Festival where she will host “Breakfast with Connie”, Celebrating Women in Food at the Stratford Country Club on Sunday, September 25^th as well as leading a charcuterie tasting workshop.

·        A Southern-style BBQ dinner “Ribs in the Square” barbecued by Boss Hogs, awarded the best Canadian Rib team in 2010, takes place on Saturday, September 24.

·        Saturday night’s BBQ, Blues and Brews is a party you won’t want to miss as beer tastings and street food from Stratford restaurateurs combine with the music of Monkey Junk!, winner of Best Blues Artist at the Canadian Independent Music Awards and Winner of the 2010 Blues Music Award for Best New Artist’s Debut.

·        The highlight of the weekend is the Savour Stratford Tasting on Sunday, September 25.  The ultimate culinary garden party features innovative creations from over 30 farmer-chef pairings competing to win culinary awards judged by celebrity chef judges along with VQA wines and craft beers for an afternoon of unforgettable delights.
