Canadian Representation at United Nations General Assembly

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-(No. 269 - September 19, 2011 - 5:15 p.m. ET) Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird will travel to New York City from September 20 to 27, 2011 to attend a series of high-level discussions on a wide range of global issues during the 66th United Nations General Assembly.

Minister Baird will accompany Prime Minister Stephen Harper to a high-level meeting on Libya on September 20. He will also represent Canada at high-level meetings to address a series of other global issues and conduct a number of valuable bilateral meetings with his global counterparts. Minister Baird is slated to deliver Canada’s address to the General Assembly on the evening of September 26 (subject to slight change).“Canadians gave our government a strong mandate to promote and protect Canadians’ interests and values around the world,” said Minister Baird. “At the General Assembly, we will work to advance the joint causes of freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights.”

On September 20, the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie), will represent Canada at a ministerial meeting of La Francophonie. This meeting will focus on major political transitions and ways member states can support the promotion and consolidation of democracy.On September 23, the Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), will attend a meeting of the Group of Friends of Central America. The meeting will serve as a forum for Canada to reaffirm its engagement in the Americas, in particular its support of security cooperation in Central America.

The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency; the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism; the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation; and Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, will also be part of the Canadian delegation at the General Assembly.

“As a founding UN member and one of its leading contributors, Canada continues to believe in the UN’s potential to contribute positively to peace, security and prosperity,” said Minister Baird. “Our team will help promote Canada’s role in ensuring the UN remains relevant and effective in confronting the major global issues we face.”
