Ontario PC Government Will Invest $2 billion More in Education, Restore Fall Report Cards
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-SCARBOROUGH—Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak welcomed students and teachers back to school today, and outlined his party’s commitment to enhance the great opportunity-builder that is a quality education for all Ontario students. Hudak was joined by Ontario PC Candidate for Scarborough Centre, Carol Williams, and fellow parents Khatija Vohra and Ayub Vohra-Bangi along with their children Aasif (7), Safiya (4) and Suhayb (1) for his announcement.
Hudak grew up in a family of teachers: both of his parents and his sister worked as teachers. In addition, it is a milestone week for Hudak and his wife Debbie, as their 3-year old daughter, Miller, attends her first day of Kindergarten. Hudak said he will get the focus of Ontario’s education system back on student learning, free teachers to teach, and give parents the tools they need to follow their child’s progress. These commitments include:Giving parents more information in a timely manner by bringing back the fall report card, which Dalton McGuinty eliminated in December 2009, and posting standardized tests and results online for parents to review;
Giving teachers the discretion to do what they know is best in the classroom, like banning cell phones, teaching phonics, and freeing them from the pressure to inflate grades; Making sure as much money as possible is spent on children in the classroom, not school board administration. These initiatives are part of an Ontario PC commitment to invest an additional $2 billion annually in education by the end of its first term. On October 6th, Ontario families face a clear choice between Dalton McGuinty – whose increasingly bizarre priorities like scrapping the fall report card, calling for cell phones in schools, teaching sex ed to six year olds, and banning chocolate milk are out-of-touch with families’ needs – and a Tim Hudak government that will ensure our education system puts students first.
